Personally, I think e-cigs are a very effective alternative to smoking. Adjusting to the e-cig takes a little while but after that it's smooth sailing!

As far as what is best there are a huge number of options available. The first question you need to ask is are you looking for something more "pen style" which will be smaller but will have less features and battery life or do you want to jump right into a "mod" which is basically a non "pen style" device. My recommendations would be:

Pen Style

Kanger Mini Protank 2 Starter Kit (http://www.quality-vapor.com/kanger-mini-protank-2-starter-kit/) | The mini protank 2 kits are a great way to get started in e-cigarettes. The kit contains 2 batteries, a Mini Protank 2 and a Kanger USB charger and wall plug. The batteries available are either 1000mAh fixed voltage batteries or 650mAh variable voltage batteries. The advantage of the variable voltage batteries is that it effectively allows you to "turn up or down" your vaping. By cranking the voltage up you will get a hotter, thinner vape while turning down the voltage will give you a cooler thinner vape. The tank on the Mini Protank 2 is also glass which allows you to use any e-liquid in the tank without any worries of the e-liquid cracking the tank due to any harsh flavorings in the liquid.

Kanger Mini Protank 3 Starter Kit (http://www.quality-vapor.com/kanger-mini-protank-3-starter-kit/) | This is basically the same as the previous kit except it is only available with variable voltage batteries and comes with the Mini Protank 3 rather than the Mini Protank 2. This kit is basically designed for the beginning vaper who wants a little more vapor production than can be produced by the single coil Mini Protank 2. With the Mini Protank 3 you can use Kanger's dual coil or upgraded dual coil heads which allow for a noticeable gain in vapor production over the single coil units.

Non Pen Style (Mods)

iTaste MVP V2 Starter Kit (http://www.quality-vapor.com/innokin-itaste-mvp-v2-starter-kit/) | The iTaste MVP V2 has been extremely popular among both new and veteran vapers for a while and for good reason! This box mod is very cost effective, has a built in 2600mAh battery and comes with an iClear 30 so all you need is a bottle of e-liquid and you're ready to go. The MVP is both variable voltage and variable wattage and has eGo and 510 threading to accommodate almost any tank.

iTaste VV (http://www.quality-vapor.com/innokin-itaste-vv-3-0-express-kit/) | The iTaste VV is kind of the bridge between mods and pen style e-cigarettes. The iTaste VV, even with it's small form factor, packs in a powerful punch and features all of the various features from it's older brother; the MVP, such as variable voltage, variable wattage, ohms meter, puff counter, built in battery, passthrough and more. With it's smaller design, typically we recommend a "Mini" size tank with the iTaste VVs such as a Mini Protank (2 or 3), Mini Davide, or any of the Kanger Evod line (Evod, Evod 2 or Evod Glass).

Other notable mods for beginners

iTaste VTR (http://www.quality-vapor.com/innokin-itaste-vtr-starter-kit-silver/) | The iTaste VTR is an extremely solid mod and is just as easy to use as the MVP or VV. The VTR is constructed almost solely from metal which gives it a very solid, hefty feel. The VTR also features a "tank bay" which gives the mod a slightly smaller form factor and also serves as some protection for the tank from falls and knocks. Unlike the MVP or VV, the VTR does not have a built in battery and requires a separate 18650 battery which does add to the cost (battery + charger $15-30) but is advantageous because it allows you to have multiple batteries both charged, charging and on your person so that you never run out of power. The VTR has variable voltage and variable wattage along with the standard safety features of the iTaste line.

iTaste SVD (http://www.quality-vapor.com/innokin-itaste-svd-starter-kit/) | The iTaste SVD is a tube style mod which totes a similar feature set to the rest of the iTaste line. The SVD is telescopic, meaning it can be expanded or shrunk to accommodate various sizes of batteries. The iTaste SVD has variable voltage and variable wattage like the rest of the iTaste line as well as the standard Innokin safety features.

As far as flavors it's hard to say what is best because it is really down what your tastes and preferences are. My recommendation would be to buy a few different liquids which sound good to you from a few different vendors and see what you think and go from there.
